Rodent Control

Rats, Mice, Squirrels, & Mole Pests

Almost half (40%) of the world’s mammalian population is comprised of rodents. There are over 2,000 species in the ‘Rodentia’ order, the most common of which are squirrels, mice, and rats. With these kinds of numbers, it’s no wonder that many homes and businesses often unknowingly harbor these furry, four-legged creatures.

Many rodents, while seemingly harmless, can cause structural damage and can carry fleas and mosquitoes, as well as a number of airborne bacterial diseases. In western North Carolina, some of the most notorious rodent pests include the Flying squirrel, Norway Rats, Roof Rats, and Deer Mice. Go-Forth Services controls these and other types of rodents through an Integrated Pest Management approach – using the least toxic method first in order to remove the pest from the premises.

Identifying Rodent Infestations

Rodents are characterized by their continuously growing incisor teeth that must be maintained by gnawing. To maintain teeth size and sharpness, rodents may damage attics, house siding, buildings, electrical wires, and even concrete.

Squirrel Exclusion

Squirrels like to use buildings, apartments, and homes for nesting areas. They get inside walls and leave bio-hazard waste behind for you and your pets. This type of rodent infestation is extremely dangerous due to the wire gnawing and nesting habits, which can easily produce a fire. In addition, squirrels can damage and shred insulation.

The Southern Flying Squirrel is the smallest squirrel in western North Carolina, with adults weighing in between 2 and 3 1/2 ounces. They can be characterized by their exceptionally large eyes, and a loose fold of skin that extends from their wrists to their ankles, allowing the squirrel to ‘glide’ from tree to tree when it is stretched. Their fur is dense and soft – a grayish-brown color on top, and creamy white underneath – and their tails are flat and furry. These animals are nocturnal, so may be difficult to catch a glimpse of.

Go-Forth practices an Exclusion method of Squirrel control, which helps prevent them from getting into places they shouldn’t be in the first place. We are not, however, licensed to remove the squirrels from a property – only keep them from entering it.

Deer mice are secretive, nocturnal creatures that can squeeze their bodies through a quarter-inch crack, easily gaining access to your home’s attic, walls, and basement. Scratching noises within the walls are good indicators that you have mice. Much like squirrels, mice gnaw on wires, creating a potential fire hazard. Mice often leave their fecal droppings inside the walls where they nest, on kitchen counters, and in pantries – potentially contaminating food.

Deer mice, often referred to as house mice, are a common pest in western North Carolina. Their size ranges from 6 to 8 inches in length, including their bi-colored long tail. Adult deer mice are generally tan or brown in color with white fur underneath, and weigh less than an ounce. The fur-less ears and black eyes are notably large.

Rodent Control Methods

Go-Forth Services utilizes a combination of baits and traps for rodent control. We locate and place the treatments at entry points, areas of frequent activity, and nests. Traps are usually implemented for mice and squirrel control, and baits are more often used in controlling rat infestations. Integrated Pest Management solutions are available for those wishing to incorporate natural or low-toxicity pest control methods into their home or business pest prevention plan.
