There are an estimated 4,000 species of termites in the world - about 10% of which have been identified as being responsible for damage to homes, crops, and plantation forests. Termites are grouped into categories based on their feeding habits; the most common groupings being subterranean, soil-feeding, drywood, dampwood, and grass-eating. As their names suggest, the subterranean and drywood species wreak the most havoc on homes and buildings.
Termite colonies can number anywhere from several hundred to several million. They often build their nests underground, in large pieces of timber, inside fallen trees or on the tops of living trees. Some species even build mounded nests above-ground. Tree stumps left in the ground are prime targets for termite nests, and if close to a structure may result in destruction of siding or even wooden beams.
